February 10, 2010

St. Charles Public Library - St. Charles

President Bob Andrini welcomed members and guests.

Old Business: Great Backyard Bird Count: Feb. 12 – 15
Last year Kane County had:

  • 149 Checklists

  • 70 Species

  • 10,735 Birds

Elgin had both the most lists submitted (41) and the most birds (3,701)

New Business:

  • In memory of Vern Mackay, Bob and Kathy Andrini are going to donate a book, Birdfinder, A Birder’s Guide to Planning North American Trips by Jerry A. Cooper. As the title suggests, it’s a great book to help plan birding vacations/trips.

  • Kane County Forest Preserve District is looking into allowing gravel mining on one of its locations: Brunner Forest Preserve. KCA is looking into forming a committee to look into it – a sheet for signup was passed around.

  • Jack Shouba contacted Bob about having bird monitors look at different properties around Campton Township – a sheet for signup was passed around.

  • An environmental conference will be taking place in Batavia on Feb. 20 and KCA is looking for someone who would be willing to set up a booth for KCA. Anyone interested should contact Bob to get the necessary materials.

  • Photo Gallery: The St. Charles Public Library has asked KCA to put up a photo display of birds for the month of May. Kathy and Bob Andrini will collect the photos (framed) by the end of March. Participants are to label their photos.

Education:
Dick Untch, Director of Development for the City of Geneva presented a program on Prairie Green Wetland (Prairie Green, Past, Present and Future). After the presentation, Dick answered many questions about Prairie Green.

Chuck Petersen showed images of some of the birds we had seen at Prairie Green Wetlands – these images were collected from members of KCA.
